Biomedical Science

Picture

Summary

At ELHT we provide at least one placement a year to students enrolled on Biomedical Science at Lancaster University, allowing them to experience working life in an NHS Pathology Laboratory.

The placement lasts a full calendar year (52 weeks) and takes place between years 2 and 3 of the degree course, extending the course to 4 years. Applications are accepted from current second year students in the second term, and interviews are usually conducted following the second year exams. Applicants are interviewed by representatives from each placement provider and the Biomedical Science course director.

Placement
During the 52 week placement the successful candidate is required to gather evidence to complete the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio (reference copy available to view on this page), with the aim of undergoing the verification process prior to returning to the University. The placement is in one discipline only, traditionally Cellular Pathology, with no rotation through the other disciplines. The portfolio is completed under the guidance of a training officer, and requires the student to follow a laboratory training plan, attend tutorials and meetings, and meet deadlines as required. Successful completion of this portfolio allows the candidate to register as a Biomedical Scientist with the HCPC upon graduation. The portfolio carries no academic weighting towards the overall degree course, however students will be expected to contribute towards an online ‘forum’ run by the University in order to pass the placement year.
